During the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, UTET Grandi Opere – in keeping with its mission as a publisher that conveys ethical values and releases works that are emblematic of major events in the contemporary world – is now publishing a work of extraordinary and unique value: La Bibbia nella cultura e nell’arte (‘The Bible in culture and art’) in collaboration with the Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation.

The design and creation of La Bibbia nella cultura e nell’arte, was the result of great editorial effort and commitment, as well as deep reflection on the biblical text, its history and its characteristics. This gave rise to a piece of work which stands out for its novelty, uniqueness and harmonious consistency.

Novelty because the goal we set ourselves was to create a work that could use the photographic techniques we currently have available to renew the great tradition of masterpieces from the past.

Uniqueness because we have achieved what was once not possible, by selecting a corpus of images with great expressive quality and by accompanying the artwork with the passages of scripture that inspired them, along with commentaries by internationally-renowned scholars. What we are presenting is a “Bible in pictures”, a spectacular volume where passages from the scriptures – selected and contained in the book – interact with biblical depictions by great artists over the centuries. This gives rise to a new and ideal Bible Codex which, likewise, strives to bring together text and images.

The fine volume La Bibbia nella cultura e nell’arte, in large format, is accompanied by another volume in a manageable size, containing the full text of the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testament).

The work La Bibbia nella cultura e nell’arte is also harmonious. The two volumes described above are both placed on an original and elegant bookrest made of plexiglass, making it possible to alternate between two different and complementary readings: the text of the Holy Scriptures is easier to handle and can be taken with us at all times, while the “Code” of this fine book calls for greater contemplation to engage with the symbolic language of forms and colours.

To release its own volumes, UTET Grandi Opere is backed by its partnerships with some of the most prestigious Italian and international cultural institutions. In particular, for the important volume of La Bibbia nella cultura e nell’arte, we drew upon the collaboration of the distinguished Joseph Ratzinger – Benedict XVI Vatican Foundation. The volume opens with the Foreword by Monsignor Giuseppe Scotti, President of the Joseph Ratzinger Vatican Foundation. Moreover, the first copy of the work will join the collection of His Holiness the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in the Joseph Ratzinger Library.

The volume in large format measuring 32.5x45 cm and containing 488 pages – in addition to the rich selection of images of works of art inspired by the Bible – includes three essays by three internationally-renown scholars: the Art Historian Monsignor Timothy Verdon, the Professor of Theology and Exegesis of the Old Testament Monsignor Waldemar Chrostowski, and Professor Baruch A. Levine, a biblical scholar and Professor Emeritus of Judaic Studies at New York University. As such, eminent representatives of the Catholic world and the Jewish world are ideally juxtaposed in a sign of mutual respect.
